Haunted Civil War Tour and Victorian Wake

The Bucks County Civil War Museum and the James-Lorah Memorial Home welcome you to a spooky evening tour of the Civil War Era!

Two Saturday evening tour dates available - Oct 21 & 28 at 6:30pm

Meeting Spot: North Main and Court Streets, on the sidewalk behind the Civil War Monument.

Tour includes two historic locations! At the Bucks County Civil War Museum, 32 N Broad Street, the ghosts of Doylestown’s war heroes rise from the grave to recount their experiences of life and death at war. At the James-Lorah Home, 132 N Main Street, an authentic Victorian Wake honors one of the fallen Union soldiers. As an added spooky treat, you'll learn some bizarre 19th century death customs and superstitions.

Tickets may be transferred to another person for the night of the event. Alternately, if event organizer is contacted through this site at least 3 days before the event, you may exchange your ticket for a voucher good for a future James-Lorah Memorial Home public tour event as advertised on this site, or, for groups of 4 or more, you may exchange your tickets for a private tour of JLMH at a mutually agreed-upon date.

Ron Kirkwood in the Courtyard

Join us at the Bucks County Civil War Museum and Library’s Saturday Speaker Series on  October 28th, 2023 at 11:00 AM. The presentation, “Too Much for Human Endurance: The George Spangler Farm Hospitals and the Battle of Gettysburg'' will be presented by author Ron Kirkwood. Ron is retired from a 40 year career as an editor and writer for newspapers and magazines in Baltimore, Harrisburg, York and Wilkes-Barre. He was NFL editor for USA TODAY Sports Weekly and has won numerous state, regional and national writing and editing awards, including managing the 32 person copy desk in Harrisburg when it won the Pulitzer Prize in 2012. His critically acclaimed book “Too Much for Human Endurance” tells the story of the Spangler Farm Field Hospital during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. The Civil War story of Doylestown native and Civil War Veteran Dr. Frank Swartzlander briefly intersects with the story of Spangler. Presented by Doylestown Historical Society and the James-Lorah Memorial Home These are Free Events. Space is limited and will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

Civil War Medicine

Join us at the Bucks County Civil War Museum and Library for a Speaker Event on Saturday, October 21st at 11:00AM. It will be entitled, “Civil War Medicine” presented by Herb Kaufman from the Grand Army of the Republic Museum in Philadelphia. Herb is a historian, teacher and lecturer with more than 2o years experience. He is a founding member of the faculty of the Civil War Institute and History Institute at Manor College and an Instructor of History at Camden County College. In addition to his talk, Herb will also display his collection of authentic Civil War era medical instruments. This is presented by Doylestown Historical Society and the James-Lorah Memorial Home. This event is free, space is limited and will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

Candlelight Cemetery Tours

The Bucks County Civil War Museum is hosting two candlelight tours of the Doylestown Cemetery on Friday OCT 20th and OCT 27th. Both tours begin at 7:00 PM. No reservation is required, tickets will be sold at the event, $10 per person, children under 12 are free.
Come and meet Doylestown's Civil War soldiers, scoundrels and forgotten heroes, and enjoy a candlelight tour of the historic Doylestown Cemetery. Any questions please contact Mike Campbell at mkcc419@gmail.com.

Civil War Munitions and Arms Presentation

BCCWRT members Jim Donovan, James Grimes and Jaye Drukas gave an incredible presentation on Civil War Munitions and Arms in the Courtyard of the Bucks County Civil War Museum on September 16th, 2023. The event was well attended and greatly received.

Living History Encampment 2023

Don’t forget to stop by our annual Living History Encampment this Saturday, September 9th from 10-4. There will be various Civil War displays and activities for the whole family. Reenactors will bring history to life, taking visitors through what it would have been like to live through this period of time. The encampment will be located at 55 East Court Street on the Court House Lawn.

Civil War Photography

Thank you to Mr. Kyle Purchase for giving a stellar presentation on Civil War Photography on August 12th despite unforeseen technical difficulties. We are lucky to have him.

Civil War Firearms Presentation

Join us on September 16th, at 11:00 AM, for a Civil War Firearms Presentation. The event will take place in the newly renovated Court Yard of the Bucks County Civil War Museum and Library. Members/Reenactors James Donovan, Jaye Drukas and James Grimes will display and discuss characteristics and uses of both original and reproduction firearms during the War and at modern reenactments. The presentation will detail how reproduction firearms are used in current reenactments. A bullet collection will be displayed as well. There will be muskets and carbines for display and discussion. This event is free of charge but donations are welcome.
